Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) 1 2026 — Complete Guide

AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) is conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) twice a year to induct officers into the Flying Branch and Ground Duty (Technical and Non-Technical) Branches. It is one of the most prestigious defence officer-level examinations in India, offering candidates the chance to serve in India's premier air force.

AFCAT 1 2026 written examination took place on February 16–18, 2026 in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode.

  • Roles: Fighter Pilot, Transport Aircraft Pilot, Helicopter Pilot

AFCAT to IAF Officer — Selection Process

Step 1: AFCAT Written Exam (CBT)

Online exam as described above. Qualified candidates called for AFSB.

Step 2: AFSB (Air Force Selection Board) — 5-Day Process

Stage 1 (Day 1):

  • OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating): Verbal and non-verbal reasoning test
  • PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test): Story-writing from a picture + group discussion
  • Result announced on Day 1 itself. Candidates who don't clear Stage 1 are sent home.

Stage 2 (Days 2–5) — for Stage 1 qualifiers:

  • Final merit based on AFSB conference result + medical fit status
  • Training: Flying Officers join at Air Force Academy, Hyderabad (Dundigal)

Preparation Strategy for AFCAT 2026

3-Month Study Plan

Month 1 — English + GK Build:

  • English: Word Power Made Easy (Norman Lewis) — 15 words/day; Wren & Martin grammar
  • General Awareness: Lucent GK + IAF-specific topics (aircraft, defence deals, history of IAF)
  • Current Affairs: Last 6 months capsule from Adda247 or GK Today

Month 2 — Maths + Reasoning + Mock Tests:

  • Maths: R.S. Aggarwal (SSC-level chapters) — Percentage, Ratio, SI/CI, DI
  • Reasoning: Verbal (Analogies, Series, Blood Relations) + Non-Verbal (Mirror image, Spatial)
  • Start 1 full AFCAT mock per week (100 Q, 2-hour timer)

Month 3 — AFSB Preparation + Intensive Mocks:

  • 2 full AFCAT mocks per week — target 180+ marks
  • OIR practice: Verbal + Non-verbal aptitude tests daily
  • WAT practice: 60 words in 30 minutes (1 thoughtful sentence each)
  • Physical fitness: 1.6 km run target < 7 minutes; push-ups, sit-ups
  • Daily newspaper reading (The Hindu / Indian Express) for GD awareness
