The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is an integral part of the law school admission process in the United States, Canada, and several other countries. Administered by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), it provides a standard measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools can use as one of several factors in assessing applicants.

The New LSAT Format (Post-2024)

If you are preparing for the LSAT in 2026, it is crucial to know that the notorious Analytical Reasoning (Logic Games) section has been removed.

The test now comprises four 35-minute multiple-choice sections (three scored, one unscored experimental):

SectionQuestionsFocus
Logical Reasoning (Section 1)24-26Analyzing, critically evaluating, and completing arguments. Identifying flaws and drawing conclusions.
Logical Reasoning (Section 2)24-26Same as above. The weight of Logical Reasoning is now doubled.
Reading Comprehension26-28Understanding complex, dense, academic texts. Inferring meaning, author's tone, and main ideas.
Experimental SectionVariesUnscored. Can be an extra LR or RC section used by LSAC to test new questions. You will not know which section is experimental.

LSAT Argumentative Writing: This is a separate, unscored, 35-minute writing sample taken online from home. Law schools receive your essay to evaluate your persuasive writing skills. You only need to complete it once.

Eligibility & Registration

  • Who can take it? Anyone applying to a Juris Doctor (JD) program. There are no specific degree requirements to take the test, though you need a bachelor's degree to matriculate into law school.
  • Testing Limits: You may take the LSAT 5 times within the current and past 5 testing years, and a maximum of 7 times in a lifetime.
  • How to Register: You must create an account on LSAC.org and register for a specific test administration window.

Preparation Strategy for 2026

The LSAT is a test of skills, not memorization. You cannot cram for it.

  1. Take a Diagnostic Test: Take a free, timed Official LSAT PrepTest on LSAC's LawHub to establish your baseline score.
  2. Master Logical Reasoning: Since it now makes up 2/3 of your score, you must master argument structure, identifying premises/conclusions, and recognizing logical fallacies.
  3. Daily Reading Comprehension: Practice reading dense academic journals, The Economist, or scientific papers to build stamina.
  4. Blind Review Method: When doing practice tests, do not check the answers immediately. Review the questions you flagged or got wrong while untimed, figure out the logic, and then check the answer.
