Common Mistakes to Avoid in UPSC CSE
- Ignoring CSAT: While only qualifying, a score below 66/200 disqualifies you — don't assume it's easy
- Only reading, not writing: Mains is entirely written. Answer writing practice from Month 7–8 is non-negotiable
- Changing Optional too late: Decide your Optional by Month 2 and commit to it fully — changing Optional after 6 months wastes preparation
- Neglecting Ethics (GS Paper 4): Many aspirants treat Ethics as secondary — toppers score 55%+ in Ethics, which significantly boosts rank
- Over-reliance on coaching notes: Original books (NCERT, Laxmikanth) should be your primary source; coaching notes alone are insufficient
- Not tracking current affairs daily: A gap of even 2–3 months in current affairs shows up clearly in Prelims and Mains GK sections
