2. All India Service Cadre & Role Profile

Unlike central civil services, the Indian Forest Service is an All India Service. Key service aspects include:

• Cadre Allocation: Officers are allocated to state or joint cadres (AGMUT, MP, Maharashtra, Assam-Meghalaya, etc.) and serve under state forest departments as Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Conservator of Forests (CF), and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF).

Unlike the Civil Services Examination which accepts graduates of any stream, the Indian Forest Service strictly enforces a pure science or engineering degree requirement:

A candidate must hold a Bachelor's degree of any University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament with at least one of the following subjects:

• Minimum Age: 21 years on August 1, 2026 (born not later than August 1, 2005).
• Maximum Age: 32 years on August 1, 2026 (born not earlier than August 2, 1994).

  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): Up to 3 years (Max 35 years).

Stage I: Preliminary Screening (via Civil Services Prelims)

• Paper I (General Studies): 100 Questions, 200 Marks (2 Hours). Negative marking is ⅓ (0.66 marks). Marks determine shortlisting for IFS Mains.
• Paper II (CSAT): 80 Questions, 200 Marks (2 Hours). Qualifying nature (minimum 33% / 66 marks required). Negative marking is ⅓ (0.83 marks).
• IFS Cutoff Reality: Because the number of vacancies in IFS is typically between 100 and 150 (compared to ~1000 in CSE), the Prelims qualifying cutoff for IFS is substantially higher—usually 10 to 15 marks above the CSE Prelims cutoff.
• Note: Preliminary marks are strictly screening and are not added to final merit.

2. Mandatory Physical Walking Endurance Test:
   • Male Candidates: Must complete a walk of 25 kilometers in 4 hours.
   • Female Candidates: Must complete a walk of 14 kilometers in 4 hours.
   • Failure to complete the walking test leads to immediate medical disqualification, irrespective of written or interview marks.

3. General English & General Knowledge Scoring: Since Paper I and Paper II carry 600 marks out of 1400, neglecting General English and General Knowledge is fatal. Regular précis writing, vocabulary building, and structured essays on environmental sustainability are essential.
