Frequently asked questions
How does PNG compression work here?
A normal PNG can hold millions of colours. The tool picks the best palette of up to 256 colours for your image and saves an indexed PNG, which is usually far smaller and looks nearly identical.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels are preserved in the palette.
When should I turn off dithering?
For flat graphics like logos and icons, dithering can add fine noise; turn it off. Keep it on for photos and gradients to avoid banding.
Why didn't a file get smaller?
Some PNGs are already optimised. If the result isn't smaller, keep the original.
