⚠️ Important Update (April 30, 2026): The WBCS 2026 Preliminary Examination was conducted on March 8, 2026. The result has not been declared yet and is expected in May–June 2026 on psc.wb.gov.in. Qualified candidates will be called for the Mains Examination (expected August–September 2026).

3. Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

A candidate must possess a Degree from a recognized University. In the final stages, candidates will be required to demonstrate basic computer proficiency.

Language Requirement (Crucial)

Ability to read, write, and speak in Bengali is compulsory. (Note: This is not required for candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali).

Age Limit (As on 01.01.2026)

  • For Group A & C: 21 - 36 years.
  • For Group B (WB Police Service): 20 - 36 years.
  • For Group D: 21 - 39 years.
  • Relaxations: 5 Years for SC/ST of West Bengal and 3 Years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) of West Bengal. Persons with Benchmark Disabilities are also eligible for age relaxation as per government norms.

4. WBCS Selection Process & Exam Pattern

The WBCS 2026 Exam consists of three distinct stages. Recently, the syllabus has been revised, making it highly competitive and closely aligned with the UPSC structure.

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination

The Prelims act as a screening test. It consists of only one objective-type paper: General Studies.

  • Type: Objective MCQ
  • Total Marks: 200 Marks
  • Duration: 2 Hours 30 Minutes
  • Negative Marking: Yes (1/3 of the marks for each incorrect answer)

Prelims Subject Breakdown (25 Marks Each):

  1. English Composition: Synonyms, Antonyms, Idioms and Phrases, Vocabulary test, Phrasal Verbs.
  2. General Science: General appreciation and understanding of science, common experiences.
  3. Current Events of National & International Importance: Significant events occurring globally and in India.
  4. History of India: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern history.
  5. Geography of India (with special reference to West Bengal): Physical, Social, and Economic Geography.
  6. Indian Polity and Economy: Constitution of India, Panchayati Raj, RBI, Planning.
  7. Indian National Movement: Nature of the 19th-century resurgence, growth of nationalism, attainment of independence.
  8. General Mental Ability: Logical reasoning and analytical ability.

Stage 2: Mains Examination

The Mains exam consists of six compulsory papers and one optional subject (having two papers, only for Group A & B candidates).

  • Compulsory Papers (200 marks each):
    • Paper I: Language Paper (Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali)
    • Paper II: English Paper
    • Paper III: General Studies-I (History & Geography)
    • Paper IV: General Studies-II (Science, Environment, GK, Current Affairs)
    • Paper V: The Constitution of India and Indian Economy
    • Paper VI: Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning
  • Optional Papers (Only for Group A & B): Two papers of 200 marks each from a wide range of disciplines such as History, Geography, Economics, Political Science, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, etc.

Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)

Candidates who qualify in the Mains examination are called for a Personality Test.

  • Group A & B: 200 Marks
  • Group C: 150 Marks
  • Group D: 100 Marks

5. How to Apply Online (WBCS Form Fill Up)

The WBCS 2026 application process has closed (last date was December 16, 2025). For the next cycle (WBCS 2027), the steps will be:

  1. Complete the One Time Registration (OTR) on the WBPSC portal if not already registered.
  2. Login utilizing your Enrolment ID and Password.
  3. Fill in the application form completely with personal, academic, and category details.
  4. Upload your scanned recent passport-size photograph (in standard dimension) and signature.
  5. Pay the required application fee (₹210 + SC/service charges) through Debit/Credit Card or Net Banking. SC/ST of WB and PwBD are exempt from the fee.
  6. Print the final submitted application form for future reference.
