From Village Girl to Income Tax Inspector: Priya Sharma's SSC CGL Story

"People in my village had never seen a woman go to Delhi for a job exam. I was the first. When I cleared SSC CGL and got Income Tax Inspector, my mother cried for an hour."

— Priya Sharma, Income Tax Inspector, CBDT (SSC CGL 2024)

Background: Rajasthan to Delhi

Priya Sharma grew up in a small village near Sikar district, Rajasthan. Her father runs a general store; her mother is a homemaker. She completed her B.Sc. (Mathematics) from University of Rajasthan, Jaipur in 2022.

She moved to Delhi with ₹30,000 — her family's savings — and took a PG accommodation in Mukherjee Nagar for ₹5,500/month.

"I had no laptop, no coaching fee money. I used the local library and YouTube. That was it."

First Attempt: Near Miss

Priya appeared in SSC CGL 2023 Tier 1 and scored 141 marks (General Female Cut-Off: 138 that year — she qualified by 3 marks).

In Tier 2, she scored 286 out of 450 — enough for a Tax Assistant (CBDC) post, but not her target: Income Tax Inspector.

"I got Tax Assistant. I was disappointed. But I gained crucial insight — I was weak in the English comprehension section and GK. My Maths was strong but not enough to compensate."

Second Attempt: Targeted Improvement

For SSC CGL 2024, Priya made specific, targeted changes:

The DEST (Typing Test) Preparation

Many candidates underestimate the DEST module. Priya didn't.

"I practiced typing for 30 minutes every day for 3 months. From 35 words per minute to 65 words per minute. DEST requires 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes — that's roughly 400 WKM. It seemed impossible at first."

Her typing practice tool: Free typing test websites (typeracer.com, 10fastfingers.com) + MS Word daily document typing.

Life as an Income Tax Inspector

"The salary was ₹44,900 basic. With HRA and allowances in Delhi, I take home approximately ₹78,000 per month. For a girl from a village where average household income is ₹15,000/month — this is life-changing.

I don't just feel financially secure. I feel respected. My neighbors now send their daughters to study. That change — that is worth more than any salary."

Priya's Top 5 Tips for SSC CGL Aspirants

  1. Don't skip DEST practice. It costs candidates their preferred posts every year.
  2. Maths alone won't save you. English and GA have the highest differentiation among top scorers.
  3. Attempt mock tests even when you're not ready. The discomfort is the preparation.
  4. Maintain an error notebook. Your mistakes are your most valuable teachers.
  5. Know your target post. Calculate the Tier 2 score needed for Income Tax Inspector (or ASO in CSS) and work backwards from that goal.
